Sports crazy

Sports!

“The only way to prove you are a good sport is to lose.”

— Ernie Banks.

I stared at the screen for a long time because i couldn’t think of what my first post is going to be. After four cups of coffee and several head scratches i thought of sports. i know the heading is boring and to some of you not so interesting.. and no i am not here to try and convince you the go out and play sports or to go down to your local Rugby, Gaa pitch and support your club no.. i am not a hypocrite i am just hear to talk about my love for sports.

Cli, Alex. Myself and Anna

So i was thrown into sports at a young age because my mother always said i had too much energy and i do thank her for doing that because my life would have been so different than what it is now. As i lived in a small village in the country side i was had to play on the boys team.. i went through the stage of them not passing the ball to me because yano “girls have cooties” but they soon realised that i had a good boot on me and i wasnt afraid of anyone!! i dominated the boys teams.. the other teams were too scared to mark me and i thought i was the bee’s knee’s.

Until…

The local club sets up a girls team. i was over the moon at the star,t i thought i would be unstoppable like playing with the boys but noooo i was very much wrong. I soon realized the boys didn’t want to mark me because they didn’t want to hurt me. The Girls were fearless and i met my competition. Training got harder but i still loved it.

Over the years i jumped from sport to sport. i didn’t know what i wanted to do and what i wanted to stick with on till my accident. i developed a growth diseases in my knees that was brought on from playing too much sport. At 14 this was heart breaking because all i wanted to do was play sports but now i had to put my sporting life on hold and get my health up! It took me a good while to get used to having evenings free and not going training and it made me realize that i have to pick one sport and stick to that.

One year later i’m back! you would think after a year i would have picked the sport i was going to stick with but nope! I decided to chance my arm at rugby because my brothers played it. Dad brought me training and i never looked back. i have found my new sport and the one i want to stick to. I know i said in my first few lines that i don’t want to be a hypocrite but here are 10 facts that girls should play rugby.

  1. The workout

It’s the best workout of your life: Forget Legs, Bums and Tums at your local fitness center. Rugby will give you a high intensity, full body workout that will transform your body faster than any gym programme.

2. Improve self-confidence

You’ll be more confident: Playing rugby is one of the fastest ways to realize that, actually, you’re pretty damn resilient. This confidence will transcend the rugby pitch and spill over into your working and social lives too

3. The social life (improves the more you age)

Playing a team sport such as rugby provides interaction and inclusion which in turn allows you to forge friendships that often carry on away from the field and to the bar! Solidarity and respect are both characteristics of rugby but also of successful friendships.

4. The friendship bonds

You’ll make unbreakable bonds: You’ll want to throw everything on the line for your teammates, and they’ll sure as hell do exactly the same for you.

5. Friends with the opposition too

More often than not, you’ll find yourself sharing a drink or two with the opposition after the match.

6. It’s actually safer than most sports

I don’t think rugby has ever been safer than it is today. With changes in scrum laws, almost overkill emphasis on not lifting the player in the tackle and a general dim view on any kinds of foul play, the bad injuries are fewer in number/

7. Your Legs!!!

You’ll get the best legs you’ve ever seen: Apart from when they’re covered in bruises, of course but you wont be afraid to show them off.

8. Everybody is welcome

Any body type is welcomed: You don’t have to be a 15 stone monster to play rugby – there really is a position for everyone. If you’re small and agile, you’ll make the perfect winger. If you’re bigger and stronger, you’ll have a lot of fun as a forward

9. Food… Two dinners on match day is acceptable!

For foodies out there this is a clincher. After a tough game you have earned a post match meal on a Sunday at the club, but there is nothing stopping you from having that roast when you get home too!

10. It is fun

Enough said really.

Me, Myself and I

Hello Everyone!

So most of you who do not know me this is just a little bit of me and why i am starting this sporting blog. To be honest my life isn’t that exciting at the moment of time as i’m still in college. I’m a final year student studying Management Practice student in IT Carlow and i am simply living my best life.

When i was a kid my mother couldn’t handle all of my energy and the fact that i had two older brothers didn’t help calm me down either. I was full of energy, full of life.. if you saw me i would either have a hurl in one hand, cuts on my legs from climbing trees in the back garden or my mother holding my hand so i don’t run off! I was the energetic in the family and my mam knew she had to do something about it. Football, Swimming, Athletics and hurling (i played hurling as there was no girls team) she signed me up for everything. My week was full of fun actives that i was so excited for but little did i know my mothers plan was to just tire me out so i would go to bed at a reasonable hour!!

Bla Bla Bla… After school i packed up my bags and moved down to Carlow. After living in my little home village Ballivor.. Carlow was like a city to me. 4 years later and i am almost done my degree and i have to say i will miss Carlow. People always told me to enjoy college because it is going to be the best years of your life.. well they were right and as i am typing this blog during the Covid-19 pandemic i have a tear in my eye knowing that i wont have that goodbye party, or i wont see most of class mates till graduation. College hasn’t done me wrong i have met so many new friends and i have made so many memories i will cherish so who knows what i will be at after my graduation.

So basically to cut it short this is my personal blog where i will be blabbing on about my life, my love for sport, college and my family. Sit back and relax and i hope you enjoy reading.

College

The fact i am on the home stretch of my college experience and handing up my finally assignments is actually very sad. It feels like only yesterday i was calling my mam saying how amazing my first week of college was. Oh god how uneducated i was about the real world when i moved away from home.. i had to live with strangers, i had to cook for myself and i had to make new friends but you know what i didn’t do to bad if i say so myself.

A lot of people say that college was there best time of life and i totally agree with that. It did take me a month to get used to living away from home and having to actually do college work without my parents nabbing at me to get work done. I would sometimes miss my 9am lectures because i went out the night before or i would hand up an assignment wrong because i didn’t read the brief properly but these are things that i have mastered over my 4 years in Carlow.

I’m glad with the fact that i went to IT Carlow instead of a big university. My friends are all up in college in Dublin and i’m shocked with the fact that there are more than 80+ people in their classes. I was blessed with the fact that i only had less than 30 people in my class and i made so many friends. I lived in Carraig Adiann for my first year and it was the best experience ever. Imagine a bunch of first years from all different courses bringing out their sofas from their apartments and sitting on the green, drinking cans and chatting till all hours. I’d say if i didn’t live there in first year i wouldn’t have made as many friends.

There is a lot of things that i am going to miss about IT Carlow.. I’m going to miss running over to college rugby training and having a laugh with all the girls and coaches. Debating if we should or not to go out for a cheeky pint after training or pushing back college work for a day because you want to hang out with your friends. I will miss the late night chats.. the endless take away and not worrying about gaining weight. Going into college hungover as hell but still having the best time.

About me!

So for people who don’t know me I’m Meaghan. I am from a small village in Meath called Ballivor.. nothing special happens in Ballivor you could blink while driving through it and miss it. I am 22 years young and i am currently studying in IT Carlow. I am studying Management Practice and i hope to graduate this year.

I lived in Ballivor for 19 long years and i loved it! when i was a child because i had all my friends there but as i grew older i lost interest in it and wanted to see bigger and better places. My parents wanted me to go to Maynooth college as it is just a 20 minute drive but i refused. I packed my bags and moved down to Carlow in September 2016. I got myself a job down in Carlow and i never looked back. Don’t get me wrong i love going home but it’s nice having the freedom and not having your mam come inot your room to wake you up.

Any way i have created this blog just because i can blab away on it and nobody would tell me to be quite! i hope you enjoy reading and please do contact me.

Traveling

Everyone keeps saying how important it is to travel. I didn’t understand why it was so important on till i packed my bags one summer and traveled the west coast of america with my boyfriend. The benefits of traveling are not just a one-time thing: traveling changes you physically and psychologically. Having little time or money isn’t a valid excuse. I found out how to do everything cheap but still have fun! I feel growing up in Ireland has its perks at my age.. i can go out with friends i can travel around Ireland with my friends but i think it has sheltered me from seeing the big bad world. I always went on family holidays when i was young but when i packed my bag summer 2018 to leave for California i had no mam or dad to look for when i needed them.

After a long 14 hour flight we landed in San Francisco on a gorgeous warm evening and we feel in love. Our hotel was about 15 minutes from the sea front and in the distance we could see the Golden Gate bridge. During our week stay we did all the touristy things we researched about.. we cycled the golden gate bridge, we walked along the pier, we crossed the sea and saw Berkeley College (oh my god it was massive). I under estimated the weather and of course got burnt. We did some research on how we will get to our next destination and we found a bus company called flex bus that was so so cheap. We booked tickets to go from San Fran to LA then La to Las Vagus then Las Vagus to San Diego. All of this cost a total of $45!! It usually costs me €15 for a bus from Carlow To Dublin.

My brother used to live in LA so he set us up at one of his friends house which saved us around $400 if we were going to book a hotel or hostel. So as the saying goes its not what you know its who you know.. Our first day in LA and we went straight to the Hollywood strip and to be honest it is nothing like the movies. We looked at a few of the dirty looking stars on the ground and went on our ways. I recommend going to see Hollywood but just don’t get your hopes. We saw an advertisement of a tour and we decided to try it out. The bus brought is all around Beverley Hills (Simon Cowells, Kim K and lots more celeb houses) and i fell in love with all the houses! we then drove on to Santa Monica and i never fell in love with a place more in my life. If i ever considered to live abroad it would defiantly be in Santa Monica. After taking a few snaps we then drove (Idris fell asleep the whole bus journey) off to the Hollywood sign which was an amazing experience. Me and Idris had a picnic on top of a hill close to the Hollywood sign is defiantly a memory i will always remember.

14th of August and it was my 21st birthday. What better way to celebrate your birthday than drinking cocktails in Las Vegas. This was by far my favorite part of the holiday!.. Drinking 24-7, spending far to much time on the roulette table and not knowing what time of day it is. My favorite memory was going to a pool party to see Tiesto play and were women were allowed in for free and Idris had to pay $100 dollars!! yes men pay in everywhere and women get in for free and free drinks. I would 100% go to Vegas again and again and again it was a different world all together.. and as the saying goes what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas..

And yes Idris fell asleep AGAIN on the bus to Vegas

Our last trip on our amazing travels was San Diego and after Vegas we needed a relaxing 5 days by the beach. Even though i didn’t wear sun cream on the first day at the beach and burnt myself really badly i still enjoyed it. We went canyoning through sea caves and ate loads of Mexican food! It was an amazing end to an amazing trip. Since taking this trip of a life time it really put travelling into prospective and there are so many cheap ways to go traveling.. and i recommend travelling with a friend because they make everything more enjoyable

Family and Friends

Human beings do not thrive when being alone so we need our family and friends as support pillars especially in difficult times. Having a strong network of supportive family and friends helps enhance our mental well-being.

Family is everything to me and coming from a big family i always had someone to turn to if i had any questions or problems. My dad was an only child and then man had four sisters. My parents always wanted a big family so they started with my brother Shane, then Aaron and then me.. They stopped at me because i turned into a big hyper child who had to always have their hand on the trolley when mam went shopping. My mother couldn’t keep me still for more than 2 minutes. I was the pride and joy of the family i lite up the room when i came in because i was the baby. But then along came Lauren 5 years later…

To tell you i wasn’t impressed is an understatement!! she stole my thunder.. my lime light and especially the baby of the family sport and to this day 18 years later she is stealing my clothes! I wouldn’t change her for the world as she is now my little best friend who isn’t scared to give me her honest opinion when i ask does my outfit look ok!! We have all grown up well and all thanks to my parents!

Plus we added a lil cute Jack Russel to our family and her name is Daisy!

Most of us have friends, or at least one friend. Someone we spend time with, someone who knows us better than others do, someone we can count on when the need arises. It’s been said that a friend is a gift that we give ourselves. There’s no doubt that a friend adds to the fullness of life.  Honesty, and trust are qualities we expect to find in a friend. There’s an understanding that the binding together of people in friendship helps each of us define and realize a meaningful life.

I have made loads of friends over my years of school and sports. I have shared so many memories with people that i will forever hold in my heart. When i moved to college i met so many wonderful people that i will keep in contact with even when we are done. It says that family could mean more than family as you share a connections but i have been lucky enough to have met some many wonderful people in my life and i am blessed with an amazing family too!
